Legionella Risk Assesments

Legionella is a bacterium which causes a group of diseases known as legionellosis, including a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. The disease is normally contracted by inhalation of water droplets contaminated with the bacterium, this can be caused by something as simple as turning on a tap. The bacterium can be found naturally occurring within water bodies; therefore the widespread nature of the organism means it is readily available to contaminate water systems.

The Health and Safety Executive’s approved code of practice and guidance: ‘Legionnaires’ disease, the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems’ gives guidance on reducing the risks from legionella. EMS undertakes Legionella Risk Assessments according to this documentation and will:

  • Undertake a detailed survey of all on-site water systems
  • Identify any areas of risk on the site
  • Make recommendations for system provision, testing if required and long term management to reduce the risk

We can also undertake individual sampling, monitoring and system risk assessments on request.
