Take a look at this image – an Asbestos Umbrella from 1933.

Asbestos has been used throughout the ages for many different things as it has so many qualities.

One of those qualities is the fact that it is fire resistant. The image shows the asbestos umbrella used in World War I by the German Fire Brigade enabling them to get close to flames and put them out. The umbrella had several holes cut out of it to allow water hoses to be put through so they could tackle fires more effectively.

Every fireman had his own umbrella; today we know that asbestos fibres can cause deadly diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis something they weren’t aware of.
