Why is Asbestos Awareness Training Required?

Asbestos awareness training is a requirement for anyone whose work could potentially expose them to asbestos, including project managers.

Asbestos awareness training is mandatory for all workers in demolition trades and those in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades such as electricians, plumbers, engineers, building maintenance managers or construction workers who could potentially be exposed to asbestos containing materials during their work.

During intrusive work, asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) may become exposed, it is important the worker knows what to look for and the correct measures to reduce exposure if this happens.

Exemption from asbestos awareness only applies where employers demonstrate work will only be carried out on buildings free of asbestos containing materials (ACM’s). This information should be available in the client’s Asbestos Management Plan.

What Asbestos Training Does EMS Offer?

EMS offers asbestos awareness training that covers the following topics in through both written and oral presentation:

The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke

The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and ACM’s in buildings and plant

The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace.

How to avoid the risks from asbestos. For example, the fabric of a building should not be disturbed unless the employer confirms no asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) are present

Asbestos awareness training can be tailored to suit the individuals attending the course however the HSE set out the mandatory criteria that must be included in the course content.

We are happy to add focus and include your own asbestos survey or specific examples related to your trade (e.g. window replacements).

Asbestos Awareness courses delivered by EMS include an introduction to working with asbestos and extended discussions about the legal aspects and asbestos management.
