In most cases, the removal of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) is a last resort. However, in some circumstances, it is always a necessity. According to HSG227:
“Where it is not practical to repair, enclose or encapsulate the ACMs, they will need to be removed. ACMs will also need to be removed if the area is due to undergo refurbishment which will disturb the ACM, or where a building is going to be demolished.”
In short, ACMs will need to be removed if:
They cannot be repaired, enclosed or encapsulated
If the area where the ACMs are located is due for refurbishment work that will disturb them
If the building is to be demolished
The price given in your asbestos removal quote will vary depending on a few factors, including:
The size of your site
The amount of ACMs present
The type of ACMs to be removed
The experience and credibility of the chosen removal contractor
A quote for asbestos removal can range from hundreds of pounds to thousands, depending on the size of the project.. To get an accurate quote you will need to provide information regarding the type and quantity of asbestos to be removed. If you are unsure or the project is large one of our contract managers will visit your site to help assess your requirements. We do not charge for producing quotations.
The timeframes for producing a quote for asbestos removal can vary. Larger, more complex removal tasks will take longer to quote for, and normally involve visiting site. Smaller and simpler projects maybe able to be quoted with the information provided, this normally only takes a couple of days.
The best way to expedite the asbestos removal quote process is to provide EMS with as much information as possible.
In HSG227, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends providing a pack containing the following, if possible:
“the scope of the work to be carried out;
the results of the relevant parts of the survey of the premises;
site plans;
information about site-based hazards that the contractors may need to take into account;
site safety rules including permit-to-work regimes;
access to the working area including siting of decontamination facilities and waste skips; (Licensed only)
access to water and power supplies;
use of site facilities;
time constraints;
penalty clauses;
whether the work area is unoccupied or if there will be people working near it;
emergency procedures;
arrangements for liaison during the contract;
whether the work will be supervised/managed by a third party; and
any other issues that might affect the way the contractors will carry out their work.”
It is not necessary to provide this level of detail in all circumstances, but the more information you can produce, the better.
The exact asbestos removal process will be different from site to site based on the type of ACMs to be removed, as well as the nature of the site itself. Some ACMs, such as well-sealed asbestos cement, can be removed by an non-licensed contractor, whereas more friable materials may need licensed removal.
ACM wetting procedures to control fibre release
The establishment of safe working zone and sometimes a ventilated enclosures
The use of specialist Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Controlled transport and disposal
Your chosen contractor should make their intended removal methods clear as part of their quotation.
